The Popcorn King

Orville Redenbacher

Popcorn Festival

Popcorn Queen. Popcorn Parade. Popcorn 5K Run. Popcorn Dinner.  Popcorn Float.

You name it; they make it out of popcorn in Valparaiso, Indiana.

We were there to shoot the Orville Redenbacher Popcorn Festival in the summer of 1981 and we learned quickly that the locals are very serious about these kernels.

This extended weekend of events began with the Orville Redenbacher Pork Chop Dinner, which was a huge draw, attracting even Richard Lugar who is still serving as the US Senator from Indiana nearly 30 years later.  (Remember, these blogs were written in 2010). From there we moved on to a hectic few days of popcorn-themed events including the parade and a 5K Run.

Our client for this project was called the Midnight Media Group and - in this day of ponderous and dull corporate mission and vision statements - we’ll always remember their slogan – “Where Good Enough Is Our Very Best!!”

Neil and Orville discuss the merits of stovetop vs. microwave popcorn.

One of the countless popcorn floats.

This pilot was giving helicopter rides in a field so his chopper became the designated camera aircraft and we got some great aerials of Valpo and its classically midwestern courthouse town square.
