You Gotta Have Heart…..
…Surgery
Dr. David Kress
We’ve shot a lot of surgical events – each one memorable in its own way. The one we’re highlighting today featured Dr. David Kress who is both very skilled and great to work with. We were doing a multiple-camera shoot at Aurora St. Luke’s and everything was working perfectly as the procedure moved along. I was directing from our setup in the hall and what I saw on camera was so hard to believe that I got up and walked into the OR to see it in person.
Dr. Kress was reaching so far into the open chest cavity of the patient that most of his arm had disappeared. (He needed to properly position an instrument under the patient’s heart and was reaching in to get it there.) That part of the surgery wasn’t needed for the final video but I’ll never forget that scene in the OR.
Three camera shoot: 1) Tripod. 2) Headcam on Dr. Kress. 3) Robotic camera above the patient. (We usually remember to safety chain this camera to the ceiling so it doesn’t fall off into an open chest.)
Out in the hallway we often create a mini-control room and, while I’m not really a doctor, I sometimes play one on TV – while directing TV.
